Discussion 15.1: Speech Buddy

In the “Schooling Pro” video I learned more about home schooling and its pros. The most important pros that Dixie mentions are its flexibility and its ability to avoid audience and bring stronger relationships between family. In the video “Schooling: Con” Robert talks about the negatives of home schooling. He mentions how home isn’t as great as environment as a classroom for learning and also mentioned how parents weren’t as effective as teachers. In the videos I watched this week I also learned how to identify the elements of arguments which are thesis, claim, evidence, and reasoning. In all the videos the speakers talk about or use evidence to justify their position by using strong supporting material.

  1. I believe home schooling was a very controversial topic and both speakers were excellent with their side of the argument. I believe Dixie had really good claims and stated them very clearly. She also spoke dynamically, which allowed me to hear her evidence and the sources that she used. Her sources sounded like very credible books. I also heard her reasoning clearly, and I could tell that she took the time to think about many of her casual reasoning. I thought Robert did an excellent job as well because he also incorporated evidence and reasoning for his claims. In the end, I was convinced that home schooling is truly for anyone, despite the pros and cons.

  2. I agree with you the videos were very helpful this week. The topic was on schools and it seems as though they were able to persuade their audience fairly well. I also found myself being persuaded when they spoke on home schooling and how it brings families closer together. Because if you really think about it your at school for most part of the day and therefore get to see and spend less time with your family. But then it’s also true that a house isn’t the best environment for learning, because if your at home your more likely to not do your work because you will find other things to do.

  3. Hey! I really liked the videos because both Dixie and Robert had a very good stand on their position for the controversial issue. Some people have their reasons for being home schooled, some are good reasons, and some are just plain bad. Dixie uses claim, evidence and reasoning in her speech and yes, you can definately see it in her speech.Robert has good support material which is a must if you want an audience to get persuaded.

  4. Hello KiwiMango! You mention the elements of an argument. How are you going to apply these ideas to your coming speech? Can you give me a specific example? :)
