Discussion Week 3.1: Speech buddies

In the three videos I learned some tips and strategies for managing speech anxiety and for getting over the fear of public speaking. To manage speech anxiety Janine suggest us to use visualization, relabeling, and relaxation. Of the three strategies I think visualization would be the most helpful for me. For visualization Janine suggest us to go to a quiet private place and use senses to feel how the presentation will go and to focus on what will go right. In the 2.2 video Janine and Anthony suggest many strategies they use to get over the fear of public speaking. They mentioned many helpful suggestions, some which I can surely apply to my future presentations and speech preparation process. I like the idea of practicing more on having a strong introduction and conclusion; I also want to visualize my speech going well.

  1. I agree with you. I learned pretty ,uch the same things. I'm not sure about the breathing exerscises, I feel like they would make me even more nervous than actually calm me down. Visualization does seem like it would help pver all, because of the fact that your picturing your self actually being there.

  2. Hello KiwiMango!

I too have gained important information throughout those three videos. When Janine suggested visualization I took that in as something I would also need to do to prepare for the presentation. Hopefully in doing that we can visualize the presentation going well instead of looking at it in a negative manner. We just need to focus on what we want the audience to get from our speech and to not worry about how "stupid" we might look in front of our peers. We need to remember we all feel the same way and just want to get the speech over with! :) haha

  3. The breathing exercising is a nice technique, but while I was watching that video I pictured myself doing that in a middle of a speech. That technique would definitely make me more nervous too. Visualization would be helpful prior to a speech, but I don't find myself going to the location of where I am about to give a speech. Wherever location I am at does not really bother me. Just knowing that there will be a group of audience is what makes me more nervous, not exactly the location. Relabeling my emotions would help me best, because I naturally already do that. I notice that whenever I get nervous, I’d begin to get tongue tied. So in my mind, I’m trying to calm myself and recollect my thoughts. It helps to play it off for a little so the audience won’t know that you’re stumbling upon your own presentation. That wouldn’t be too good. :]
