Discussion 9.2: Chapter Concepts
A concept in Chapter 13 that I found interesting was about gatewatching. Gatewatching, according to the textbook, “involves monitoring news sources to analyze and assess the information those sources produce.” Gatewatching allows audience members and listeners to assess the credibility, correctness, and accuracy of information. When in a public speaking class the audience can use gatewatching to assess the credibility and accuracy of information given by a speaker. In any speech it is important to have credible information and not give misleading information. By learning about the term gatewatching I will learn to better assess the information that speakers speak about and I will also assess the credibility of my future speeches. Overall using gatewatching can greatly affect the quality of a speech.

As I was reading through this chapter, I thought that gatewatching was pretty interesting. Usually people don't have the time and day to really "monitor" the sources that they retrieve their information from. But doing so would make it really accurate for the speaker and the audience. Most important is for the audience, because of course like you said, you don't want to give misleading information. It's also a throw off if you give wrong or insufficient information because sometimes you could just be confusing yourself along the way. Luckily the audience is not sitting there doing research on what the speaker is saying. That would be horrible! But, regardless, speakers should do good research on their topics.
